Miami Real Estate Agents, Be Alert: Fake Buyer Inquiries Targeting Agents with Crypto Scams

⚠️ As a Miami real estate agent, you're likely no stranger to online inquiries from out-of-town buyers. But lately, there's a growing scam targeting realtors with fake buyer leads—and they’re becoming increasingly convincing.
These scammers aren't just spamming forms and live chats. They are real people! They're engaging in back-and-forth communication, pretending to be serious buyers, only to eventually lure you into a cryptocurrency scam.
🔍 The Pattern to Watch For
These scams follow a strikingly familiar formula:
-
The "buyer" claims to be a wealthy individual or investor, often with a family, looking to buy a single-family home.
-
They make the inquiry seem urgent—saying they want to buy “within the next 2 months.”
-
They are vague about the location, never naming a city, zip code, or community—even after follow-ups.
-
They request contact via WhatsApp, WhatsApp call, text message early in the conversation. But they will never accept a video call. They are now also asking to be contact by text sms message.
-
They keep up communication for days or even weeks, pretending to be engaged and knowledgeable.
-
Eventually, they bring up cryptocurrency, either asking for a transfer, payment, or “investment opportunity.”

🛡️ How to Protect Yourself
-
Screen leads early
Ask direct questions: “What neighborhood are you considering?” or “Do you already have financing in place?” -
Avoid jumping to WhatsApp
Legitimate clients don’t mind starting with a quick email or phone chat before switching platforms. -
Do not participate in any crypto exchange
No real estate transaction requires you to send cryptocurrency on behalf of a client. Full stop. -
Trust your instincts
If something feels off—trust that feeling and proceed with caution. -
Report the incident
Save the inquiry details and report suspicious activity to your brokerage, the FTC, and/or your MLS or association.
✅ Final Word
Scammers are evolving, and they're targeting busy, responsive, and professional agents. Their fake inquiries are designed to waste your time, gain your trust, and ultimately trick you into a financial scam.
